QUALITY IMPROVEMENT INITIATIVE – ENHANCING PEER SUPPORT AT THE BBC

  1. Fernandes, Haleon, London, UK

Background:

The BBC introduced a Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) network in 2014 to support employees experiencing psychological distress. However, a 2021 review identified governance issues, low visibility, and role ambiguity, highlighting the need for a more structured approach tailored to workplace-specific mental health concerns, particularly trauma exposure in news organizations.

Aims:

This initiative aimed to transition from a reactive MHFA model to a proactive, structured Peer Support Network, ensuring sustainability, governance, and improved employee engagement.

Methods:

The new framework introduced clear role definitions, structured escalation procedures, and ongoing professional development. Key interventions included targeted recruitment of 300 peer supporters, regional leadership, a digital data-tracking system, quarterly CPD training, and visibility measures such as branded lanyards and an intranet directory. A hybrid model combined external specialist training with internal Wellbeing Champions.

Results:

Following the pilot, key performance indicators (KPIs) showed improved understanding of peer support roles, increased confidence in supporting colleagues, and enhanced awareness of available resources. The initiative improved governance, visibility, and sustainability while remaining cost-effective.

Conclusions:

The BBC’s transition to a Peer Support Network effectively addressed previous challenges, embedding a data-driven, evidence-based approach. Successes included stronger oversight, increased accessibility, and a structured training pathway. Challenges included data protection approvals and resource constraints. Future plans focus on global expansion, ongoing CPD, and quarterly evaluations to ensure long-term impact, fostering a culture of psychological safety and well-being within the BBC’s diverse workforce.
