Workplace Visits
**All visits will take place on the afternoon of Monday 15th June 2026 ahead of the main Conference; most begin at 14.00 hours unless otherwise specified and last for 90 – 120 minutes**
CPD accreditation: it is hoped that some visits will be approved for CPD points by FOM. The application has been made and the outcome will be posted here as soon as it is available.
Please book your preference at the time of registering, using the on-line registration system. All places are subject to availability and numbers are very limited on some of the visits. There are also minimum numbers on various visits, so the line-up may be prone to change according to uptake.
These visits have been chosen and developed for their educational value to delegates. They represent unique opportunities for insights into aspects of occupational health which delegates may not usually have access to. The visits are available to full delegates only.
For Visits outside Nottingham, transport may be arranged, depending on uptake. You will be asked about this when you book.
If there is a charge to attend a visit, this is shown within the description. However, because of high numbers of late cancellations/no shows for visits in previous years, a charge of £40 will be made if delegates cancel within two weeks of their visit or fail to arrive on the day. This system is intended to ensure that drop-out levels are as low as possible. No deduction will be made unless the place on the visit is cancelled after 1st June 2026 or the participant fails to arrive on the day.
1. Boots
Location: Beeston, Nottingham, NG90 1BS
This is a very special opportunity to visit significant sites for Boots, one of Nottingham’s most famous companies.
Boots was founded in 1849 by John Boot in Nottingham, starting as a small herbalist shop providing affordable medicines. Following John's death in 1860, his wife Mary and later son Jesse Boot expanded the business into a major national pharmacy chain. The company established its headquarters, major manufacturing, and "Pure Drug Company" roots in the Nottingham area.
This Workplace Visit will begin with a visit to the main fulfilment warehouse followed by a visit to the amazing archives on site. Boots was at the forefront in the advancement of colleague care employing welfare workers as early as 1913. The very first nurse to receive the OH nursing certificate worked at Boots for 27 years and was promoted to Chief Nursing Officer.
A visit to the archives provides fascinating insight into the landscape of retail and healthcare innovation for customers and the working conditions for employees. From Victorian, through pre and interwar years, to the superstores and manufacturing of the 1980s, Boots stores and innovations have reflected the shifting social needs, cultural aspirations, and patterns of everyday life.
