Professor Baker is a Consultant orthopaedic and trauma surgeon specialising in hip and knee replacement surgery. He was the chief investigator for the NIHR 'Occupational support for Patients undergoing Arthroplasty of the Lower limb' (OPAL) study that developed a 'return to work' intervention for hip and knee replacement patients. He currently leads the NIHR OPAL trial which is assessing the effectiveness and cost effectiveness of this intervention and is recruiting across the UK. Professor Baker was the Royal College of Surgeons of England lead for Orthopaedic Research (2019-2024) and has worked with the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) developing national guidelines and quality standards related to hip, knee and shoulder replacement surgery.
