Professor Sharon Stevelink is a Professor of Applied Epidemiology and Occupational Health at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, King’s College London, with formal training in Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
She leads a research programme centred on the relationship between work, welfare and health. Her work spans three interconnected areas: the health and wellbeing of military personnel and veterans; occupational mental health in high-risk professions including healthcare workers, police officers and emergency responders; and the impacts of work and welfare on people with mental health conditions. Across these areas she has developed particular expertise in psychosocial risk factors and organisational determinants of health, examining how the nature of work, occupational exposures and working conditions shape health and work outcomes.
A cornerstone of her research is the use of large-scale linked administrative and health data, including leading the first national linkage between Department for Work and Pensions benefit records and mental healthcare records.
She works closely with government departments including the DWP, Joint Work and Health Directorate, UK Ministry of Defence, Office for Veterans’ Affairs, to ensure evidence meaningfully informs policy and service design. Professor Stevelink is an independent scientific member of the Industrial Injuries Advisory Council (IIAC), UK Government.
